Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics or CEREC ® uses CAD/CAM technology, incorporating a camera, computer, and milling machine in one instrument. iSmile dental team utilizes a special camera to capture pictures of the focused tooth. This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a computer screen, where we apply CAD (Computer-Aided Design) technology to design the restoration. Then CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) automatically creates the custom restoration while you wait. Once finished, we confirm the fit and color and then bond the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The whole process is done within the same office visit within a couple of hours.

The CEREC® Process

CEREC ® uses CAD-CAM technology to design and mill custom restorations during one visit to the dentist. This process works in-house in four easy steps.

Exam, Selection, and Preparation

Before any procedures, your dentist will determine if CEREC ® is best for you and your dental needs. Candidacy depends on how much healthy tooth structure is available. After reviewing options if selected, an iSmile dentist will begin by administering an anesthetic and preparing your tooth for restoration by removing decay and weakened tooth tissue.

Impressions

First, we take a 3-dimensional image of the original tooth formation of how the tooth needs to be restored is captured from a digital camera scan of the tooth. This image is later referenced when creating the restoration, eliminating messy traditional molded impressions. The computer and CEREC ® 3D software then convert the digital image into a virtual model of the prepared tooth.

Milling

This device is used to create a custom restoration for the tooth. Based on the original color of your tooth, an iSmile dentist will select your color-matched ceramic block. Then, within minutes, the milling device can create the restoration needed.

Placement of the Restoration

After the restoration is made, it is ready to be tried on to ensure that you get proper fit and bite. When it is complete, the restoration is polished and bonded into place by your dentist. Therefore, no temporary restoration is needed, and no return trips are necessary, saving you time and money.
